Dentures

Dentures are removable tooth replacement devices that are used to replace missing teeth & the surrounding tissue.

Denture Procedure:

  1. Mold: The doctor does an examination & takes a mold of the teeth to make a model for manufacturing of dentures
  2. Bite recording: Recording upper & lower jaw bites to arrange dentures
  3. Try-In (Try-In): Giving the patient the opportunity to try on temporary dentures before the finishing stage (Denture base in the form of wax)
  4. Finishing stage: Completed dentures processed will be given to the patient. How to care for dentures will also be explained to the patient
  5. Follow-up treatment stage (Review): Ensuring that the patient is comfortable & that no oral tissue is injured due to dentures

Types of Dentures:

Acrylic Dentures

  • Dentures placed in an acrylic resin mold that is smiliar to the color of the gums
  • Advantages:
– Cheaper price
– Can be repaired if broken or teeth can be added if necessary
  • Disadvantages:
– These dentures have a thick base
– Easy to break if dropped

 

Iron-Soled Dentures (Cobalt Chrome)

  • Made of Cobalt Chromium alloy. Dentures will be placed on the framework together with acrylic
  • Advantages:
– Thinner & stronger than acrylic
– Lighter to wear
– More durable (Not easy to break if dropped)
  • Disadvantages:
– More expensive
– Has hooks that are sometimes visible when smiling

 

Flexible Dentures (Valplast)

  • Denture base that is made of Nylon. This causes dentures to be flexible as compared to acrylic type
  • Advantages:
– Lighter, stronger & durable
– Thinner & more flexible than other dentures
– More comfortable than acrylic
– Easy to blend with dental gums
– More durable (Not easy to break if dropped)
  • Disadvantages:
– More expensive than acrylic
– Can’t be added or repaired if dentures are loose

Tips when wearing dentures:

  • Start slowly by eating soft foods & cut your food into bite sized pieces
  • You can also try denture adhesive to help getting used to wearing dentures
  • If you experience pain, do not wear the denture for a while. Seek a dentist immediately for treatment & assessment.

How to care for dentures:

  • Brush without toothpaste & rinse dentures after eating & before sleeping
  • Soak dentures in clean plain water when not in use. Do not use warm or hot water
  • Do not try to change or repair the dentures yourself
  • Avoid wearing dentures while sleeping
