Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is an alternative to tooth extraction for damaged teeth where the pulp has become infected or has died.
This therapy can prevent your tooth from being extracted & allow it to continue to function. Depending on the severity of the condition, this treatment may require more than one appointment.

Characteristics of Teeth That Need Root Canal Treatment:

  • A tooth that is badly damaged or has a large patch that involves the pulp layer of the teeth
  • A dead tooth

Consequences If Root Treatment Is Not Done:

  • Discomfort or pain will worsen
  • Infection or pus will occur on the tooth
  • The tooth may have to be forced to be extracted & requires tooth replacement

Root canal treatment procedure:

  • Before treatment begins, X-rays of the teeth will be obtained to determine the amount & condition of the affected tooth roots.
  • Anaesthesia will be used to ensure the patient’s comfort during the procedure.
  • First, the enamel & dentin of the tooth will be cleansed to remove the cavities.
  • After that, the decayed pulp tissue will be removed from the root canal tooth canal produced & disinfectant will be used to eliminate bacteria.
  • After the cleaning procedure is completed, medication is introduced into the canal. A temporary filling will be placed onto the tooth.
  • If there are no undesirable symptoms, the canal will be cleaned once more & filled with a root filling material (Gutta Percha) at the next visit. After the root treatment is completed, the tooth will be permanently filled. Some teeth require the tooth case (crown) to keep them from breaking easily.
  • Root treatment with the insertion of a post core will be performed prior to crown treatment to reinforce the tooth structure.

After Root Treatment

Root treatment prevents you from losing your entire tooth. But in the long term, root canal treatment causes:

  • Teeth becomes brittle & break easily after treatment.
  • Teeth discolouration to become slightly darker.

Both of these effects require the patient to make follow-up treatment such as post to strengthen the teeth to receive a filling material as well as a crown to prevent the tooth from breaking while making it more aesthetic.
