Minor Oral Surgery (MOS) for Removal of Impacted Wisdom Teeth.
The wisdom tooth is usually impacted/ does not grow in the correct position/ embedded in the jawbone because there is not enough space for it to grow normally in the mouth.
In most cases, the wisdom tooth will cause swelling in the surrounding gums. Impacted wisdom teeth can also result in leftover food being trapped between the gaps & causes damage to the teeth in front of it.
A normal extraction cannot be done to remove impacted wisdom teeth due to teeth embedded in the gums. Therefore, minor surgery (MOS) should be performed.
This treatment is performed under local anesthesia by the dentist to ensure the patient’s comfort during the procedure.
Patient will be given medication before & after the treatment to ensure comfort during the treatment
MOS Procedure:
Local anaesthesia will be given to the patient. The patient will feel numbness in the lips, chin, tongue & cheeks.
Gum will be cut to reveal the area of the impacted wisdom teeth.
The bone around the tooth will be cut to make room for the wisdom tooth to be removed.
The wisdom tooth may need to be cut into several pieces to aid in tooth extraction.
Once finished, the gums will be sutured.
The patient will be given an appointment date after a week to re-examine the surgical site & open the suture thread.
Post-Procedural Complications:
Slight discomfort in the surgical area
Minor swelling
Injury to tissues near the surgical area (cheeks, tongue, adjacent teeth, nerve tissue).
Injury to nerve tissue can cause prolonged numbness in the lips, chin & tongue.
Care After Minor Surgery:
Do not gargle too often or forcefully within 24 hours after surgery
Apply ice to the cheek in the surgical area to reduce swelling
Eat soft foods. Avoid eating hot & spicy food.
Maintain oral hygiene & surgical area. Patients should brush their teeth as usual.
Do not smoke & consume alcohol during the wound healing period.
